I was out at dinner tonight with my wife and parents, and we were talking cars. My dad and I almost always talk cars since that's what we do, especially with Barrett-Jackson going on right now, but anyway.
My wife doesn't particularly care for the Corvair. She doesn't hate it, or if she does she doesn't have the heart to tell me because she hates almost every car I've owned since we met. But I know she doesn't like it. She doesn't like riding in it, which kinda kills a little bit of the fun for me...what's the point of having a car you enjoy driving if you can't enjoy driving it with your lady friend?
But there is one car on which we both agree:
'64 Ford Galaxie. Specifically a black Galaxie 500 coupe like the one pictured above, which is pretty similar to the one that was featured in Men in Black 3, which is where she saw the car.
Now, the shitty part is that even the projectiest Galaxie is a little bit more expensive than what I can sell the Corvair for. I think the Corvair can bring a little under $2000, since it's a running/driving project that just needs body work. But I'd be looking for a Galaxie with a solid body/frame (so...not a New England car, meaning I'll have to search far and wide), interior is less big of a deal, and frankly I don't care if it has an engine and transmission since I'd be looking to swap out almost anything besides a 390/4 speed combo.
First things first though, which is selling the Corvair. I might test the waters on eBay with it this week...put a reserve on it where I would be pleasantly surprised to sell it. I got a stupid deal on the car, only paid $800 for it and I'm not into it for much more than that...I'm pretty sure I can double my money on it. I could sell the Jaguar too and get a really good Galaxie, but I love the Jag, so it's not going anywhere.
Anyway, I thought Oppo should be the first to know. Hopefully the Corvair brings good money and I can find a solid Galaxie.

Right on. Enjoying the hobby with your significant other is important I think. Me and my fiancee never saw eye to eye on cars for sure which always made me sad.

That freaking blows. Why did she hate your cars?
I have a soft spot for anything with an underdog factor, so Corvairs are cool with me.
If you can't find a Galaxy, look for similar cars like a GM B-body or a big Chrysler. Personally, I'd look for a B-Body; they made millions of them and they ride nice, parts are cheap, and they made enough stylistic varieties for anyone to appreciate.

Yeah, I mean she has a lot of respect for my hobby and she's never held me back from getting a car I wanted as long as it made financial sense to do so (does it ever?). But I think it would be really cool to get somewhere we can take out and it feels like ours rather than just mine. Then she won't have an excuse when I make her learn to drive a stick and make her do it on the Galaxie instead of the Civic, haha.

She doesn't like small cars and low cars. The Corvair, unfortunately, hits both. Her least favorite was my '84 C4, she hated that car with the white hot fire of a thousand suns. I think her favorite car I've had was either my allroad when it was running, or my '89 MB 560SEL...both larger cars, which she likes.
Corvair aside, I've always been kind of a Ford guy...not hard core, but I'd usually prefer a Ford over the comparable GM offering. But what I'll definitely be doing is showing her things and hoping she likes them, because while Ford built plenty of 64 (I prefer 63, but whatever) Galaxies, that's still a smaller pool than I usually choose from.

That's great man, it's best if you can get a car you both enjoy. And hey you had fun with your corvair so there ya go!

I haz a sad. I know someone with a 1963 or 1964 Fairlane convertible. It's a really nice car. Also just finished a '49 Ford about a year ago. Pretty big Ford guy as well.

I got no complaints about my time with the Corvair. Every time I go out somebody asks me about it, either a Corvair owner or somebody who has no idea what it is. It's a super cool little car, lots of fun to drive, and it handles great. And hey, if it gets me into a Galaxie, then it helped me out even more.

In 1964, they had extra frame strengthening and rust proofing on the full size fords, which is probably why you see more 64s than 63s. The 64s will likely last an eternity.
Pre-68 as you know, will not have headrests or padded dashboards and will likely have a single pot master cylinder, all of which are bad for safety if that concerns the wife.
I cannot remember the year model, but at some time they went away from leafs and used a 3 link with coils. In general, 3 link rear ends are a very good design.

My girlfriend did not like the Magnum one little bit every time I pointed one out in a parking lot or driving by.
Now that I've got one? She points them out to me and tells me about whenever she sees one drive by. She even does it for the SL (when she sees another R129, but all she knows is they look similar).
If you're in New England, look for swap meets at Englishtown, the Goodguys East Coast nationals (wherever they moved to), and the worst you can do for a craigslist ad is go and look. You never know what you'll find. My Magnum is 10 years old and has no rust under it. NJ car for nearly all 10 years too. Also, negotiate. You'll find one. Even if it involves negotiating with the other half.

4 speed with a 102. Originally a 140 car, but when the PO bought it the 140 was seized so he swapped in the 102.

That's 100% the plan even if I don't find a car, I'll just make a steelies and dog dishes coffee table.

4 speeds are getting hard to find in the corvairs so it should be an easy sell.

Yeah, I don't anticipate a tough sale. When I bought it, I contacted the guy 5 minutes after he listed it, so I was first. 12 hours later when he called me, he had had 25 calls about it, so I rented a trailer and picked it up that night.

I have the same issue. My wife hates riding in my '74 Buick Apollo. I know she loves me, though, because she talked me out of selling it a couple years ago. I really should get the AC fixed, that would help my cause.
